The Fall of the Matron
The party explores ancient caverns, uncovers powerful relics, and faces their most dangerous battle yet. Magic, mystery, and fate collide in this intense chapter.
The party began deep underground in the vast caverns beneath the mountains β a subterranean forest lit only by glowing moss and bioluminescent mushrooms. The air was damp, still, and filled with the faint hum of ancient power.
π± Silas and the Seed
Fresh from merging with the seedling of the fallen Elder Tree, Silas pulsed with new energy. The ancient bond with nature deepened, and the party pressed onward.
π Lulu's Whispered Path
Lulu reached out to the nearby fungi with her druidic magic. They responded, revealing a hidden passage to a forgotten room carved into the rock. Inside were trapped crates, one of which contained 10 gold bars, each worth 250 gold β a fortune hidden and untouched.
After carefully disarming the traps, but not before taking a face full of poison from one of them, the party looted the room and emerged back into the forest floor of the cavern. Towering trees and strange mushrooms formed a haunting maze around them.
πͺ The One-Way Archway
Ahead stood a moss-covered archway with a heavy, arcane-lined door. As soon as they stepped through, it sealed shut behind them β likely designed to keep monsters outβ¦ or something in.
They climbed the stairs beyond, eventually finding Del suspended mid-air, trapped in a magical cage.
π Del's Rescue
The party worked quickly to free her. She was bound in anti-magic shackles on every limb, neck, mouth, and eyes. The party determined that the lanterns surrounding the room were the cause of the shackles holding Del. Silas snuffed out their flames freeing Del. After lowering her cage and using the Portable Hole, Del was returned to their side.
π Trapdoor and Parlor Room
While searching the area, the group discovered a trapdoor submerged in shallow water. It led to a cozy parlor room stocked with ancient alcohol and plush furniture.
They took a short rest:
Silas raided and stole all the alcohol (as expected).
Thomas reviewed his notes and studied magical theory.
Everyone recovered.
π₯ The Fireball Hall
Peeking around a distant hallway, Thomas and Silas were suddenly engulfed by a massive fireball. It was a trap β and a warning.
Beyond this hallway lay the corrupted Occult of Ioun, and the party knew what they were walking into: a final confrontation with the Matron Lich, slowly reforming.
βοΈ The Final Battle Begins
The party surged into action:
Lulu summoned divine wrath with Moonbeam, searing cultists.
Silas unleashed Eldritch Blasts and his deadly Crimson Harvest.
Thomas fired long-range attacks and positioned his Steel Defender to protect Del.
Del hurled spell after spell, warping the battlefield with power.
Elliot activated Rageful Nimbus to render a rebuke of lightning to anyone who dared to injure Silas.
The last cultists fell. The room fell silent β and then the Matron began to reform.
β οΈ The Lichβs End
The moment her body stitched itself together, the party struck:
Elliot released a stampede of spiritual beasts, battering her with primal force.
Luluβs Moonbeam held firm, disintegrating the Matron in radiant light before she could fully recover.
The Matron Lich was gone.
π The Phylactery
They found her phylactery, a blackened crystalline heart still pulsing with necrotic power.
Without hesitation, Thomasβs Steel Defender crushed it, ending the Lichβs cycle of rebirth forever.
π Treasure and Rewards
While resting and healing, Thomas identified the magical loot recovered from the chamber:
π« Alchemy Jug β Claimed by Thomas
π Ring of Amity β Claimed by Silas
πΏ Staff of Charming β Claimed by Silas
β΄οΈ Wand Spindle of Fate β Claimed by Blaze
π Arcane Grimoire +2 β Claimed by Del
βͺ Bead of Force β Claimed by Elliot
With the enemy vanquished, the treasures claimed, and the caverns behind them, the party now prepares to move forward β deeper into the mysteries of this unraveling world.
